Seven out of ten injuries that occur skiing can be avoided with good technique

A good learning of the technique before practicing skiing avoids seven out of ten injuries, as the specialist of the Knee Unit in the area of Orthopedic and Traumatological Surgery of Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja, Dr. Fernando Jordá recalls. Most of these injuries are due to sprains in the joints and will depend on the discipline we practice, "since in alpine skiing the injuries tend to be centered on knees due to sudden turns, in the practice of snow the most frequent injuries are in dolls and forearm, "says the specialist.

Among the most frequent are meniscal injuries, ligament injuries, fractures and less frequent knee dislocation (the latter is a very serious injury and requires urgent treatment). Knee injuries should be diagnosed as soon as possible after skiing and, if possible, immediately after the injury. "This is because the appearance of a stroke in the hours after suffering a fall, a blow or a dislocation in the knee, can hinder the correct diagnosis by physicians," says Dr. Vicente Carratalá, specialist of the Service of Traumatology of Hospital Quirónsalud Valencia.

In the face of any type of accident, Dr. Jordá "performed a self-check on the areas that hurt us the most, because it can happen that a contusion at the time of the accident has no symptoms and it is not long before we begin to present the limitations. If after the autoexploración we are well and we can move by our means, it is recommended to go to the medical centers of the tracks ". If the situation seems more serious, there is no need to move, and we will have to notify the aid services on the track and wait for them to move us.

Tips to avoid injuries

Skiing is a sport that requires an excellent physical form and a refined technique, so a previous preparation is necessary. "In general it is advisable to start exercises a few weeks before going to practice it, combining flexibility and muscular toning, especially the lumbar, abdominal, pelvic girdle and lower limbs," says Dr. Jordá.

Another of the main factors when it comes to avoiding injuries is fatigue. "Most injuries occur at the end of the day where fatigue decreases attention and we present greater muscle fatigue," says Dr. Carratalá. The specialist recommends relaxing musculature and joints from time to time.

Finally, Dr. Carratalá reminds us to avoid the practice of this sport in adverse environmental situations and avoid unknown and unmarked terrains, in addition to always wearing helmets to avoid head injuries.

Conservative meniscus surgery

Meniscal injuries and meniscal tears are related to the loads and a moment of rotation in the semiflexion position of the knee joint, such as those performed while skiing. "The meniscus have an enormous facility to injure themselves and curiously very little to repair themselves. One third of meniscal injuries are related to sports activity in fundamentally young patients ", highlights Dr. Pedro Luis Ripoll, specialist in Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology of Hospital Quirónsalud Murcia.

Not so many years ago the meniscus was considered an embryonic remnant without any value in joint function, so it was systematically extirpated. "Our knowledge of the structure of the meniscus and its joint function has led to consider in the meniscus a vital structure for the conservation of articular cartilage and consequently the functionality of the knee, its destruction will lead especially in young people the appearance of osteoarthritis by menisectomy what we should try to prevent as long as the characteristics of the injuries allow us, "explains Dr. Ripoll.

The removal of the meniscus is only considered according to Dr. Ripoll "in young patients when the suture of the meniscus is unfeasible given the destruction of the meniscal tissue or the poor prognosis of the location of the rupture and in older patients when the meniscal lesion produces pain or joint block. "

It should be noted that the approach to this type of surgery is performed through arthroscopy, which significantly improves their results, as well as a shortening of the recovery times of the patient. Although as Dr. Ripoll highlights, "the results will depend more on the meniscal tissue that we have been able to preserve."
