The Hospital Quirónsalud Valencia met yesterday to more than fifty specialists in cardiology in the first Conference on Advances in Cardiac Surgery, under the title "Cardiac Surgery in the era of Primary Angioplasty and TAVI", addressed the current treatment of various cardiovascular pathologies with high prevalence such as severe aortic stenosis and the advances that have occurred in recent years within their surgical techniques.

Cardiovascular pathology is the leading cause of death in developed countries, above tumor pathologies, "so the progress in its diagnosis and treatment" as stated by doctors Juan Martínez León, chief of cardiac surgery at Quirónsalud Hospital Valencia, and Eva Rumiz, interventional cardiologist at the Quirónsalud Valencia hospital "is crucial for the increase in survival".

In this regard, the specialists discussed the advances in minimally invasive cardiac surgery techniques that are currently practiced in operating rooms, as well as in interventional cardiology performed in haemodynamic rooms for the treatment of cardiovascular pathology.

Among the advances in minimally invasive cardiac surgery, Dr. Martínez León highlighted the treatment of coronary artery disease without a pump. Thanks to this technique, the surgeon can perform the procedure without using extracorporeal circulation and without stopping the heart. Among its advantages, the specialist noted "a considerable reduction in the inflammatory reaction of the organism and the need for transfusions, in addition to a considerably shorter recovery time".

Another of the outstanding techniques is the replacement of the valve by means of a mini-sternotomy, "that is, opening only one third of the sternum, which greatly reduces postoperative pain. With this action, the need for blood transfusion is almost completely eliminated thanks to the use of blood recuperators, the patient's rehabilitation is quicker and with shorter hospitalization times, "explains Dr. Martínez León.

For its part, the interventional cardiologist of Quirónsalud Valencia, Dr. Eva Rumiz, highlighted the approach in haemodynamic rooms of coronary disease in many cases multivessel by radial access that allows the patient's discharge in less than twenty-four hours, the closure of adult congenital heart disease, as well as the implementation of a pioneering program of total chronic occlusions.

Among all the techniques, Dr. Eva Rumiz highlighted the implantation through the femoral artery of aortic prostheses to treat patients with severe degenerative aortic stenosis, where cardiac surgery is a high risk or are inoperable. "This treatment," he said, "allows the implant of the prosthesis through a small incision in the patient's groin, with no need in many cases of general anesthesia and with a shorter hospital stay, reducing the risks for the patient and improving their quality. of life".

At the end of the presentations, those present paid tribute to Dr. Eduardo Otero for his recent retirement from the board of cardiac surgery services at the Clínico and Quirónsalud hospitals in Valencia and his invaluable contribution to the development of cardiac surgery throughout his professional career.
