In Spain there are about 400,000 aesthetic surgery interventions per year according to the latest data from the Spanish Society of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery. 83% of these interventions are required by women and 17% by men, although as noted by Dr. Salvador, plastic surgeon of Quirónsalud Torrevieja, "in men has been experiencing in recent years a greater demand for this type of intervention, since only three years ago they did not reach 12% ".

The increase that these surgeries have been warning in the last decade has been motivated mainly by the development of new less invasive and safer techniques for the patient, as well as the best qualification of the specialists. At this point, Dr. José Salvador advises to confirm whether our surgeon has the title of specialist in this type of surgery by going to the official societies, as in this case would be the SECPRE, before undergoing any type of intervention. Regarding the elements that make aesthetic operations more and more secure, the specialist highlights "a greater use of local anesthesia or sedation, which avoids the risks of the use of anesthetic products; higher quality and control of prostheses and fillings; and finally the introduction of the latest generation laser with more effective and safe results ".

Regardless of the type of surgery to which the patient is going to undergo, there must always be different tests to know their health status prior to the operation. "The realization of a blood test, an electrocardiogram and a cardiac scan is essential if we want to undergo an intervention with all the guarantees of safety," Dr. Salvador warns.

The importance of looking good to feel better

The specialists of Quirónsalud Torrevieja highlight the importance of feeling good about our personal image and how it affects our physical and mental health. "In addition to seeing the patient's self-esteem multiply, it influences people in their own environment and provides them with emotional balance and impacts on their physical well-being", clarifies Dr. Salvador

As for the part of the body that demands the most change among women, the breast is located and it places breast augmentation interventions in the first place, followed by liposuction and the elevation and reduction of breasts. In men, the demand for intervention does not vary much either, since it involves the elimination of gynecomastia (enlarged mammary gland), followed by liposuction and rhinoplasty.

The period of greatest demand for this type of intervention is the months prior to the summer period, a period in which three out of ten interventions are carried out. For Dr. Salvador "the desire to wear a beautiful body in summer and the incompatibility of sunbathing or bathing after the operation, make these months the most appropriate to carry them out."
