The Increase in Sedentarism at Work due to New Technologies negatively affects our Cardiovascular Health

Almost 83% of the population barely performs any physical activity while at work.

The changes implemented to current workplaces, marked by the use of new technologies, have created increasingly sedentary positions, which have a very negative influence on cardiovascular health, particularly among the younger active population, state Cardiology specialists at Quirónsalud Torrevieja and Murcia hospitals.

According to the data obtained by the Ministry for Healthcare, Social Services and Equality in 2012, 82.6% of the population barely performs any physical activity during their job or main occupation, and the numbers continue to increase. For doctor Juan Luján, Cardiologist at Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja, "the sedentarism and inactivity implicit in most current work positions, together with an abandonment of the Mediterranean diet, has as a consequence an increase in obesity and the early development of cardiovascular diseases and high blood pressure, especially among the younger population."

"People who do not perform any type of physical activity in their job," points out doctor José Nieto, Cardiologist at Hospital Quirónsalud Murcia, "present a risk between twenty and thirty percent higher of suffering a cardiovascular event than those who perform work that implies some form of physical activity."

"These risks increase significantly for people who accumulate over seven hours a day of sedentary work, especially if they sit for over thirty minutes without getting up," indicates Doctor Luján.

Doctor Nieto recommends periodically getting up from our work station to talk on the phone or with a co-worker, walking up and down the stairs that lead to our office, and taking breaks to walk.

Tips to care for our Cardiovascular Health in the Workplace

The specialists at Quirónsalud hospitals recommend following the guidelines below while at work in order to enjoy good cardiovascular health:

  • When possible, walk to work, park our vehicle further, or get off the bus one stop earlier.
  • Use the stairs instead of the lift at our workplace.
  • Get up from the desk every half an hour to walk around a bit.
  • Take advantage of our breaks to take a walk.
  • Stretch at the beginning and end of the workday.
  • And if, despite everything, we have a very sedentary job, it becomes even more necessary to include physical activity in our lifestyle habits outside of work.

Finally, the specialists remind us that, "although most people don’t need a special assessment when starting to perform physical activity, examination by a specialist is recommended. In case you suffer from diabetes or present several cardiovascular risk factors, it may be advisable to undergo a stress test before starting an exercise programme."
