Spanish researchers at Quirónsalud Marbella and Quirónsalud Campo de Gibraltar Hospitals have announced their conclusions from a research study carried out using the information provided in the medical records of 90 million patients. This information has enabled the creation of the first big data-based article to ever be published by Spanish ENT doctors.

The article, entitled "Risk of Diabetes in Patients with Sleep Apnoea. Comparison between Surgery versus CPAP in a Long-Term Follow-up Study" has been accepted by the renowned scientific journal Canadian Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery for the first quarterly issue (Q1). The research was leaded by the Heads and Specialists of the ENT Unit of the two Spanish hospitals, Dr Carlos O’Connor Reina, Dr Carlos Casado Morente and Dr Laura Rodríguez Alcalá together with the Head of the Pulmonology Unit, Dr José María Ignacio García. This research study, based on a 5-year retrospective follow-up of 90 million patients, proves that the surgical treatment of sleep apnoea in comparison to the use of CPAP is better in preventing the onset of diabetes type 2. The CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) device is a machine that supplies air while the patient sleeps at a sufficiently-high pressure as to prevent the collapse of the airways. Pressurised air flows through a mask that is sealed on the mouth or the nose. The research study concluded that the number of patients surgically intervened for their sleep apnoea developing diabetes after 5 years was nearly 50% lower than for patients using CPAP. Although both therapies have a protective effect against diabetes, ENT surgery has proven to be significantly better in this study.

The research project was possible thanks to a global health research network known as TriNetX, which combines the data from the medical records of over 60 health establishments in the world, as well as the cooperation of the biomedical IT department of the Madrid Polytechnic University. This is the first article based on Big Data to be published by a Spanish ENT Unit and the first one of its kind being published in Europe. This project confirms the research project carried out by the Otolaryngology Department of Stanford’s Faculty of Medicine, which used the same research technology to arrive to a similar conclusion in an article published 6 months ago.

"We are grateful to the Quironsalud group and to its Research and Innovation Department headed by Rocío Díaz for trusting our Unit to become pioneers in the use of the Big Data tool, which has enabled us to explain the prognosis and evolution of conditions to our patients in order to select the most convenient treatment for them", states Dr O’Connor, the Codirector of the ENT Unit.
