oftalmologia_nabil_ong_cataratas_markoftalmologia_nabil_ong_cataratas_markThe solidarity of Marbella residents has given Mark, a 62 year-old British homeless of Marbella, the opportunity to regain his eyesight and start a new life. A story of collective cooperation in which the Advance Ophthalmology Unit of Quirónsalud Marbella Hospital has had an active role. The hospital did not hesitate to help this immigrant when the non-Government Organisation Collective CallingEste enlace se abrirá en una ventana nueva contacted them to seek cooperation as the patient’s health was worsening with the emergence of cataracts in both eyes. His disease had developed so fast that only in a few months Mark had lost full eyesight and was at risk of having irreversible blindness. Collective CallingEste enlace se abrirá en una ventana nueva had been helping him for a few months by providing food, but when the cataracts problem emerged causing him severe blindness, he lost all autonomy to cope by himself. The head of the non-Government organisation made a SOS call to our medical centre and the response was immediate. Both the Management at Quirónsalud Marbella Hospital and the Ophthalmology Unit immediately committed to pay for the costs of the surgery that took place on the 8th of February with successful results.

"I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the hospital for its generous support in providing the operating theatre for free and to Dr Nabil Ragaei for performing the cataracts surgery for Mark, a homeless man who needed it. Thanks to this help, Mark has a much better eyesight now. The procedure has now changed his life. We cannot be grateful enough for having made this possible", stated Gemma Carr, Co-founder of the non-Government organisation Collective CallingEste enlace se abrirá en una ventana nueva, who stood beside the patient throughout the process and wanted to personally give Dr Ragaei and the hospital Management a thank-you certificate for their altruistic gesture. "It is a privilege for us to have been part of this cooperation chain. We are only one more link in this act of solidarity. We hope Mark can regain control of his life and have a new opportunity thanks to everyone’s help", stated the Head of the Advanced Ophthalmology Unit, Doctor Nabil Ragaei.

What is a hypermature cataract?

A hypermature cataract is an alteration in the lens nucleus, which is the central part of the eye responsible for the focusing of light, that makes it very opaque. This pathology can cause blurred and even total lack of vision. Hypermature cataract surgery is a surgical procedure consisting of the removal of the lens in order to replace it by an intraocular lens. As the lens is so hard and dense, surgery is complex and requires specialised techniques. Cataract surgery is currently very common. The majority of people experience significant improvements in their eyesight after their surgery.
