Quirónsalud Marbella Hospital begins 2023 with important news in the field of eye health. The Quirónsalud Advanced Ophthalmology Unit, associated to our Marbella hospital, has recently announced the addition of IPL laser technology, which is considered to be the most advanced technology available for the treatment of the dry eye syndrome.

"The IPL laser is the newest equipment in this field. It is based on the application of intense pulsed light to stimulate the production of tears and improve eye lubrication. The results are very effective, as it immediately reduces the symptoms of the dry eye such as the feel of tired eyes, eye irritation and blurred eyesight. Patients see the improvement in their quality of life right after the treatment", explains the Head of the Ophthalmology Unit, Dr Nabil Ragaei Kamel.

Our expert states that pulsed light is an "innovative" treatment for the dry eye syndrome, as until now, the only available treatments were based on the application of medicaments, heat and massages to reduce the symptoms of this uncomfortable pathology. However, thanks to pulsed light, eye dryness can be directly addressed and the symptoms can be improved with longer-lasting results.

A very common condition

The dry eye syndrome is a very common condition. Dry eye happens when your eyes don’t make enough tears to stay wet or when the tears don’t work correctly. This can make your eyes feel uncomfortable and in some cases it can also cause vision problems. The Head of the Ophthalmology Unit, Dr Nabil Ragaei Kamel, assures that this is "one of the pathologies we most frequently have in our consultations and it is caused by various factors, such as being often in dry environments with air-conditioning, high temperatures and direct exposure to the sunlight, as well as the increasing use of screen devices such as the mobile phone and the computer ".

The ophthalmologist can diagnose this pathology in his surgery and advise on the suitability of the IPL laser treatment, following the performance of certain diagnostic tests that will inform patients of their being eligible or not. Pulsed light is applied during the course of 3 to 4, 15-minute sessions. One of the main benefits of this treatment is that it is not invasive, which means it does not require surgery or incisions.
