The kidneys are two small organs located behind the abdomen, on both sides of the spine. Its function in the human body focuses on the production of urine to eliminate toxins and excess fluids, helping to maintain the balance of the body. Cancer can make an appearance in the network of channels inside the kidneys that are used to filter the blood, or in the nucleus of the organ, where urine accumulates. In Spain about 10,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.

  • Treatment. The therapeutic options for kidney cancer depend on the stage of the pathology, the size that the tumor tissue has reached and how far it has spread. In addition, the age of the patient and his general health status also influence. The potential treatments are surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, although this type of cancer is relatively resistant to radiation or chemotherapy. The standard treatment for localized kidney cancer is the resection of tumors that exist in one or both kidneys.
  • Surgical approach:
    • Partial nephrectomy: It is a surgical procedure to remove the tumor from the kidney and tissue near the organ. This option is usually carried out to prevent the loss of renal function when the patient does not have full functionality in the other kidney or has already been previously removed.
    • Radical nephrectomy: It is a surgical procedure to remove the kidney, the adrenal gland, the tissue near the organ and, usually, the closest lymph nodes.
This type of intervention has traditionally been performed with an open approach, which forces the surgeon to make a very large incision in the abdomen of patients. Conventional laparoscopy reduces the size of the incision, but limits the skill of the specialist, as well as the field of vision and control during the procedure.
  • Robotic approach:
If your doctor recommends a kidney operation, you may be a candidate for the most advanced and safest surgical technology in the world: the Da Vinci Robotic Surgery System. The DaVinci Robotic Surgery System has become the ultimate expression of minimally invasive surgery and allows surgeons to exponentially increase accuracy during interventions. In addition, the robotic approach offers the unique advantages compared to the open surgery that we have previously cited.
