Obesity, also known as the epidemic of the XXI century, affects 17% of the adult population, and its consequences have associated diseases such as diabetes, ischemic cardiopathology, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory failure, arthrosis, and development of tumours. There are different types and stages of obesity. For this reason the Obesity Unit of Hospital Quirónsalud always studies and assesses the patients, as well as their associated pathologies in order to decide which is the most suitable treatment.

Endocrinology and nutrition

The main objective of our endocrinologists and nutritionists is evaluate obese patients and teach them new healthy dietary habits to help them to lose weight and decrease the risks of suffering from excess weight diseases. Among other techniques and therapies, our specialists use dietary products such as Ysonut, which guarantee a safe and natural solution in all its treatments.

Bariatric Surgery or Weight Lose Surgery

Gastric bypass and vertical sleeve gastrectomy are the most common types of bariatric surgery. Both are done using laparoscopic surgery. The patient must stay in hospital 4 days. Surgery is carry out in a safe hospital environment with cutting edge technology. These techniques help to decrease between 70% and 80% the excess of weight in patients suffering from obesity.

Metabolic Surgery or Diabetes Surgery

Metabolic Surgery, also known as Diabetes Surgery, is one of the newest and most effective surgeries done in our unit. This technique has shown broadly satisfactory results in patients with type 2 diabetes. Metabolic Surgery allows them to completely abandon their medication and to prevent any type of associated disease arising.

Endoscopic techniques in obesity

Among the different techniques, there are intragastric balloons with different instructions according to the duration of the implant. The duration of a balloon may vary between 3 months, such as Obalon, 6 months, using the classical and most used Allergan, and 12 months, such as the Spatz adjustable balloon. With regards to the last mentioned balloon, this can be adjusted in different stages. To implant these balloons, patients need to be sedated or anesthetised. POSE Surgery is more suitable with patients who need a permanent treatment for obesity. Currently the newest, this method enables reduction of stomach capacity. The procedure consists in forming folds in the stomach (plications). This operation is minimally invasive and highly tolerated, being possible to be discharged few hours later.

Paediatric endocrinology

The paediatric endocrinologist will carry out a complete dietetic study of the child and, after that, a complete physical exploration including, among others, weight, size and BMI (Body Mass Index), waist, hip and arm circumference, and blood pressure. Finally, a blood test is carried out which includes not only the basic profile but also the hormonal, basal and nutritional profile which will allow us to dismiss anaemia and endocrinological disorders, among others. According to the results, the child will start a specific treatment which best meets his or her needs.

The aim is to assess the personal circumstances of each patient, and monitor the different processes of weight loss with specific therapy programs of intervention in obesity treatment, as well as provide the necessary support to the patients need in order to achieve a better quality of life.
