The Assisted Reproduction Institute Quirónsalud Dexeus Murcia and the Assisted Reproduction Center Quirónsalud Valencia launches the second campaign of free infertility detection on the occasion of the International Month of Fertility. The initiative consists in carrying out a male fertility test ( seminogram) and female with ultrasound and gynecological consultation. It is aimed at couples who have been looking for a pregnancy for more than a year and women under 38. The testing period will be from June 18 to 22 and it is necessary to have a previous appointment that patients can request in Valencia by calling 96 104 16 21 or in the mail fiv.val@quironsalud.esThis link will open in a new window and in Murcia through 968 27 10 30 or in the mail prevencion.mur@quironsalud.esThis link will open in a new window.

The incidence of couples with fertility problems reaches 18%. "In Spain," says Dr. Javier Díaz, head of the Assisted Reproduction Institute Quirónsalud Valencia "according to the latest record of the Spanish Fertility Society we are around 16% and these figures are still increasing."

Infertility is a problem that affects both men and women. "Currently, due to the more exhaustive studies that we use, we could say that 25% of the cases infertility is of male origin only, but if we account for the primary causes of female origin in which man also presents seminal alterations, we come to 50%, so we can affirm that in 50% of infertile couples the male factor is altered, "says Dr. Díaz.

The quality of semen and endometriosis, frequent problems of infertility

Several studies show a decrease in sperm concentration in the last decades, with the consequent reduction of seminal quality. In fact, a research among university students from the Region of Murcia in which Dr. Laura Sarabia, responsible for laboratory and specialist in assisted reproduction of Dexeus Murcia, has participated, has analyzed the seminal quality. First, the association between dietary intake of antioxidant nutrients and seminal quality has been studied. The results have indicated a positive association between the consumption of different antioxidant nutrients (cryptoxanthin, vitamin C, lycopene and b-carotene) and the total mobile sperm count. The seminal volume also increased with a higher intake of vitamin C, lycopene and b-carotene. In conclusion, Dr. Sarabia explains that "in our study some sperm parameters could be sensitive to the intake of antioxidant nutrients, in the same way, the current recommendation of vitamin C consumption may be insufficient to achieve the maximum benefit in terms of seminal quality "

On the other hand, endometriosis is a benign disease that affects women during their reproductive life. The name has its origin in the word endometrium, which is the tissue that lines the inside of the uterus and that sheds every month with menstruation. Endometriosis occurs when the endometrial tissue leaves the uterus and sits in any part of the abdomen.

According to Dr. Víctor Villalobos, head of the Assisted Reproduction Unit Quirónsalud Dexeus Murcia and Quirónsalud Orihuela Medical Center, "in women diagnosed with endometriosis, their chances of becoming pregnant increase markedly with reproduction techniques. diagnosed with endometriosis, we suggest in vitro fertilization (IVF) as the first choice treatment. If the degree of endometriosis severely deteriorates the ovarian reserve, oocyte donation is the recommended therapeutic option ".
