Quirónsalud Marbella Hospital has received four electric cars to be used by the patients in the Paediatric Unit who require a surgical procedure. This surprise has been possible thanks to car company Ataa Cars which has donated the vehicles to this hospital on the Costa del Sol.

The minicars are replicas of actual top-range car models and are remote-controlled by the healthcare professionals during the transfer of the child from the room to the operating theatre or on their way to diagnostic tests. The use of these cars within the hospital space provides an enhanced experienced for the youngest patients.

"Our main objective is for the child to have a positive and pleasant stay at out hospital, preventing the levels of anxiety that are usually present in the prospect of a surgical procedure. Their concerns vanish when they get into these cars because, from that time on, they begin to perceive the situation as a game. The child is entertained and forgets he is in hospital. The fun component also helps support the parents who feel relieved when they see their child relax in the moments prior to their surgical procedure", explains the Head of the Paediatric Unit of Quirónsalud Marbella Hospital, Dr Adelaida Sánchez Bacallao.

Besides, the reduction in the levels of anxiety deriving from the moments of fun prior to entering the operating theatre also benefits them on having the anaesthetics administered. "Several medical studies state that fear, stress and anxiety can affect young patients when being administered anaesthetics and on waking up after the procedure. Our members of staff always take care of every detail and consider the context in which a child arrives to a surgical procedure. These cars are an added element to a protocol of action that has been specially designed for the youngest to feel as comfortable as possible in the operating theatre", highlights the Head of the Anaesthetics and Recovery Unit, Dr Blas Rodríguez Gil.

The co-founder of Ataa Cars, Jerónimo García, has expressed his satisfaction with the idea of cooperating to these types of initiatives. "Providing these electric cars was an idea that derived from the need to offer the youngest patient an alternative to the stretcher and wheelchair in their transfers. Our mission is to make the little ones happy and to see them smile, and this is why we feel so grateful to be part of such a positive change for the children of Quirónsalud Marbella Hospital.
